Das neue Marketing: Influencer Marketing

Valerie: Welcome Irina! Please tell us who you are and what you do?

Irina: I’m Irina Graf the Founder of TheMICEBlog and Eventplanners Talk. The Event Planners Talk is a sub social media account of my blog where I hosted a weekly twitter chat about various events topics. Since 2019 the chat has taken place on monthly basis instead of weekly.
On my blog and in my videos on YouTube I share all my experience with event planners around the world.

In 2011 was the beginning of influencer marketing. Very few destination had begun working with bloggers. During a scholarship competition at Regent University London I had the chance to attend the world travel market at a travel exhibition in London. There I decided spontaneously to attend the travel blogger conference. That gave me the chance to hear from top travel bloggers how they collaborate with brands and monitarize their blogs. All of them were full-time-bloggers. So from the very beginning I learned that you can run your blog as business, if you take it seriously and professionally.

For example, what I did:

  • having a media kit
  • research the destination before I approach them for any collaboration
  • contacting media representative from destinations (as blogger relations where allocated in the media department)
  • pitching for familarisation on media trips

This meant unpaid trips but all travel costs are covered. This is an example for famtrips which are very common in our industry. Most destinations welcome my initiative, because I was the first MICE Blogger out there.

This was the first time I realized that influencer marketing in the MICE industry is not only about the digital aspects, but also needs the face to face element. And subsequently in 2016 I registered a business and decided to work on it full time, concentrating on content marketing and live events.

– What is an influencer?

Valerie: Let’s first define influencer, what do we mean, when we talk about influencers?

Irina: In my opinion, when we talk about influencers, we talk about digital influencers, who are very active in the digital space. A digital influencer is someone who shares content on a daily basis on social media and is considered as a trusted source of information. There is a distinction between someone who is influential in the event industry with years of experience and a large network, but is not active in the digital space; compared with someone who is digital influencer posting daily on social media channels, dedicted a blog, vlog or podcast. This influencer has gained a loyal following and trust through social media. In my opinion a influencer in the MICE industry has to bring a combination of three elements.

  • have solid industry experience
  • be well connected with a strong network offline
  • be actively online on a daily basis on their social media channels and blog

After all MICE is a face-to-face business and therefore online engagement must drive offline sales to be successful.

Valerie: I agree to your opinion and in addition I see that the hospitality industry confuses it with someone who is posting nice pictures on instagram. For a example in january 2018, where the hotelier from Dublin was not very nice to the young girl on YouTube. This is what hoteliers talk about, when they talk about influencer. And this is not an influencer.

Irina: Someone with work experience. I agree with you.

An influencer is someone who is making professional content management and marketing on daily basis sharing their knowledge in a blog, vlog or on social media. This is an influencer for me. Not the 16 year old, who is having fun travelling the world.

How can you become an influencer?

Valerie: And also what is quiete interesting: Sometimes you read or see a post on social media about “How to become an influencer”? Do you think that someone can become an influencer? And if yes: How?

Irina: Yes, we all became influencers at some point of our career. You can become an influencer through your professional work, I believe. You have professional experience that you studied or worked in the specific industry and developed your writing skills, social skills, social media skills, communications skills. And many influencers become influencers through their hard work and their professional background. It took time to start monetarizing their websites. They have readers an loyal followers who take their advice, ask them questions and interacts with them. Then they get this influencer status.

Valerie: I agree with you. I think it is not something you can study. It is something how you act, how your personality is and how someone else is thinking of you.

Irina: I think the digital aspect is very important. For me, an influencer in the context of influencer marketing is a digital influencer. This influencer has to be knowledgable of course on producing content for digital plattforms and know the industry. If you are an influencer in B2B for example, like in MICE then you can’t fake industry expertise. It is very important that you expertise in one are that you are covering.

On the mbt meetingplace in Frankfurt some asked me that question and I responded that someone is an influencer when other people call you an influencer. I think you can’t say “I am an influencer”. This status should be earned, that other people perceive you as an influencer. I find it a bit strange to say, I am an influencer. I’d rather say I am a blogger, marketer, content creator but to say I am an influencer is something I’d say about myself.

How to become an influencer”?

– Why don’t hoteliers use influencer marketing?

Valerie: At the mbt meetingplace in Frankfurt you held a Q & A about influencer marketing in the event industry. In the summary in the VDVO blog you write that you started blogging in 2011 and that Influencer Marketing was born at that time. It seems to me that we are still in 2011 in the meeting and event industry and in the hotel business. What do you think is the reason for that?

Irina: That’s a very good questions. There are many reasons and first of all it’s the budget, which is allocated for other activities. Especially the hosted buyer programs which are common in our industry. These are very expensive and therefore there is no budget for influencer marketing. If you compare it with leisure travel or food or fashion they don’t have hosted buyer programs. So there is huge difference of budget which you can invest. Secondly MICE is a face-to-face-business. Suppliers today still want to meet their potential clients face to face. I think there is definitely a preference for hosted buyer programs or famtrips. But I see a shift to influencer marketing in perception of budget and more case studies. I am sure we will be catching up in the next years.

Valerie: What I see is, of course we have the events and the PR before, but during the event you never see anything about the event or about the organizations.

Irina: Of course. Because all the money you invest you have to expend this. You definitely want to increase the ROI and extend the lifespan of this event.

Zusammenarbeit zwischen Influencern und Destinationen oder Hotels – Cooperation between influencers and destinations or hotels (Minute 16:00)

Valerie: When a hotel hires an influencer, it’s often about holidays and free time. But influencer marketing can also be interesting for conference hotels. It’s about being visible.

Irina: Influencer marketing is just this new tool you need to try and test and learn by doing. It is really hard to get it right from the first time. It’s not you host one influencer and have lots of lots of requests coming in. It is a process and you need to work with different influencers and with same during a period of time. You have to develop this influencer relationship, because they need to know your product very well. They have to know you and understand what your goals are and why you want to achieve this. This should be a long term vision for both: the hotel and the influencer.

– Hoteliers underestimate Influencer Marketing!

Valerie: Let’s talk about a few questions from your Q & A. One question was: „At the moment, hoteliers in particular, are talking about how influencers are overestimated. What do you think?“ Will, in my opinion they underestimated influencer marketing.

Irina: Yes there is some negative sentiment from the hotels. I think it’s not overrated and on the contrary hotels can leverage influencer marketing to their advantage if they get it right.

I can give an example form an influencer cooperation one influencer has with a hotel chain. He’s a brilliant photographer. He had a collaboration with this hotel chain that he will take pictures of the bar opening with an amazing view. The hotel can use the photos for their brochure and this is fantastic. Not only the photos will go on the brochure, but also on the influencer’s Instagram account. There will be just a huge promotion for the opening of this bar and the propertay. It’s amazing.

Was denkst du denn?”

Irina: And I definitely can understand the negative experience of hoteliers, who receive many generic messages for free hotel stays, like “Hi I will be in your area next week and just wanted to drop you an E-mail if you would like to colaborate and offer me a free stay.”

If I would be a hotelier, I would also ask, why should I offer you a free stay?

If the request is very generic, like “I will be in your area next week, I have a blog, …” That might be not enough for the hotelier. There has to be more content and more context to this request. Why want this influencer stay in this specific hotels, because there are other hotels as well in this area. So there must be media kit for example.
Actually this is something I learned straight away: Media Kit is the most important thing. Have your media kit, your statistics about your page, your social media accounts, testimonials, references. All informations that can give credibility to your blog and just research the property and find the right business case.

And I must say, not only the hotels complain, the influencers also complain. For example, sometimes they are invited by a big brand and this says “Do you want to come to our hotel and write about us” And the influencer says “I produce very high quality content, produce videos etc. would you pay me for this.” And the brand says “No we just pay you the hotel stay.”

Both sides need to understand that there must be a balance and what is acceptable or not.

And every business hotel, food & beverage, MICE has to invest in sales and marketing, so influencer marketing is one of the none traditional channels. Without using it, they cannot say it doesn’t work. They have to try it and work with three or four different influencers and be patient. Influencers optimize their content for search engines and some businesses are very saisonal. Let’s say this influencer was at your hotel in winter, this winter is over, but next winter you’ll have customers for this region, because they were looking for a winter destination. There are many factors that determine the success of influencers relations and collaboration.

And there are influencers they are extremely professional and talented. They are photographers or videographer.

Offering an influencer a stay in your hotel, might be much more cost efficient than hiring a professional photographer. Influencers bring their talent and also their passion. And if they like your brand, they go the extra mile and create several blogs. It’s definitely worth kind of explore collaboration and building a relationship.

Genuine influencers with demonstrable influence – how do I recognise them?

Valerie: We talked about collaboration before the recording and you said: Influencer marketing is not like buying a chair. It is more like relationship which needs to be maintained. Another questions was: “How do I recognise influencers who have real, demonstrable influence?”

Irina: With social media I believe you can find out immediately.

Influencers can

  • generate conversations around the topic
  • they have genuine audience of like minded people who are also your target audience

And of course you can see it in the follower list who likes and interacts with their content.

  • they can mobilize people to attend your event
  • they can create a chat around your brand
  • they can introduce you to some one

If they meet these criteria than they have real influence.

Of course it is very individual to your goals and what you want to achieve with influencer marketing.

Do you want to generate some awareness, some chat around your hotel, your venue. It depends.

And what I look for is the talent and professionaliziation of influencer marketing. I know this from my collaborations with convention bureaus and destinations, they like to show the content to potential clients.

It is very important that the content is very high quality. This can be a case study or a spotlight video. The amount of original content is very important. I think it’s very important to create your own content instead of just sharing content form other people – of course this is also important – it should be about 80/20.

As an influencer you are the content creator and unless you know you are a top top influencer with million followers – which none of the mice influencers are – you need to produce content on a daily basis for social media and multiple posts for Instagram, Twitter, Vlogs and also long form and short form content.

For example when I attend an event I would share at least 10 pieces of content and then another 20 – 30 various pieces about the event over a longer period.

Influencer Beteiligung – Influencers industry involvement

Irina: Another aspect which is very important: Influencers industry involvement

  • are they on important trade shows
  • are they well connected
  • do they speak on panels
  • or are they members of associations

Also look at influencers evolution over the time. I think influencers should get involved together with the industry and innovate and progress the content marketing.

For example: Has the influencer started producing a podcast or video or have they done any interesting collaborations with other influencers or other media outlets. I think you need to consider these factors.

How measurable is Influencer Marketing?

Valerie: I’m in your opinion as well. Influencers need to have network and do the content professionally. The influencer needs to know the industry and should be able to connect people.

And the question that always comes up: How measurable is Influencer Marketing?

This is the point you mentioned with the winter or saisonal business. The ROI is timely different. You need to invest now, but the profit will first come next winter, next meeting season or what ever. They keep asking, what’s the use?

Irina: It depends on what do you want to measure. It can take years or it can be faster. For example: I have organized the event planners talk event and our venue sponsor we have confirmed 2,5 months ago. Now we have 30 people who signed up. Within 2,5 months I bring certain people to attend this event. Here you can measure it. 30 people will be introduce to a venue. This is the traditional way to measure influencer marketing.

The other way is, it will take time, you can look at search engine optimization and see okay, when people google my hotel with this keywords, this article comes up. This is another way to measure. Then wait one year and you might get new bookings. There are different ways to measure influencer marketing. But it is an important aspect in the consumer journey. Think about that people look for information. They want to book a hotel and they will look on google, they will look on tripadvisor, they will check the hashtag and the hotel might come up on instagram. They will watch a video on YouTube. But they will never tell the hotel, that this was the milestone for their booking.

Hoteliers fragen immer wieder, was nützt das?

Irina: Es kommt darauf an, was du messen willst.

– Reach is not the same as relevance!

Valerie: I read an article at the google watch blog, that a traveller has about 700 touchpoints within 5 months until booking the venue or hotel.

It is often claimed that reach is relevance. But now there are macro or micro influencers in addition to the stars in the influencer sky. What is really important when cooperating with influencers?

How do you collaborate with an influencer and how should an influencer collaborate with an company?

Irina: I think professionalism is very important. For me professionalism of content:

  • professional taking photos
  • good written text, blogpost, social media post
  • professional podcasts

I think that’s where influencer marketing is turning now.

And relevance. That means: Is the influencer the right for the brand? Is there a story behind this? Why is the cooperation entered into?
Influencer can create a story about why they collaborate with a certain brand. There must be good context to this.

Influencer must have passion! Not everything has to be looked at monetary perspective. There must be definitly passion for what the influencers does, because sometimes you were asked for one acticle, but you are so passioned about this hotel, that you want to write three articles. There must be passion for this!

  • Relevance
  • Professionalism
  • Passion

  • Relevanz
  • Professionalität
  • Leidenschaft

Valerie: That’s what I think as well. Sometimes I talk to hoteliers and they tell me, well he or she has just 300 followers. Yes only 300 followers, but those who interact with the influencer and respond to the posts with comments, likes and shares.

Corporate Influencer: Deine Mitarbeiter als Botschafter! – Your employees as ambassadors

Valerie: The most important influencers which every company has are: employees. Let’s talk about employees are influencer in the B2B Market. How can that work in your opinion?
I think this something no one really is thinking about it or realizes that this is a opportunity.

Irina: Influencer Marketing in B2B is linked to making your employees your ambassadors and your influencers. Give them the freedom to post about your product or service online. They’ll become your biggest advocates. I agree with this, because I do have influencial collegues who work for companies and you know the companies because you know the people. You work with them, you care about what they do, when they change jobs you still follow them. They are influencers. And influencer marketing in B2B is about employee engagement.

– Influencer marketing is a marathon – not a sprint!

Valerie: That’s the point. Patience and long-term thinking is the key.

Irina: And also with twitter for example. The life span of a tweet is about 8 seconds. If you have only one influencer writing about your venue once a year, it’s already down. This is why you need to refresh the influencer collaboration and your content is always up to date and people are talking about all the time.

Valerie: Well, that was a long chat! Is there something we still need to talk about? Did we forget something to mention?

Irina: I think we covered pretty much everything and I would be quite interested to listen to this podcast again in one year and see what changed within one year. It would be interesting where the industry develops.
